Welcome to Sources in Genesis! This site displays a visual representation of the Documentary Hypothesis (also known as JEDP), which seeks to identify the different sources of origin for the Pentatuch text. Here, I am focused on Genesis, which is primarily made up of three sources: J, E, and P. Following the hypothesis of Richard Elliott Friedman ("The Bible with Sources Revealed: A New View into the Five Books of Moses," New York: HarperCollins Publishers, 2003), I have color-coded and organized Genesis to draw attention to these sources, working to understand how they originally looked before they were joined together to form one narrative.

This was accomplished using Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), a coding language designed to help make sense of texts in a digital medium. Museums, libraries, and other scholarly organizations use TEI markup to visually display and explain abstract ideas on a computer screen. Find out more at https://tei-c.org/
